Thierry Mugler, a French fashion icon whose groundbreaking design was worn by celebrities including Kim Kardashian West and Lady Gaga and who appeared in films such as "The Indecent Show", died Sunday at the age of 73.
Her death was announced in both French and English via her official Instagram account. The cause of his death was not mentioned.
In a statement, the House of Mughal brand described him as "a dreamer who has strengthened his imagination to be bolder and dream bigger every day for a fashion designer, perfume maker and people around the world."
His campaigner did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Mughal started her career as a dancer and worked for several French fashion houses before launching her own collection in the early 1970s. She brought an element of drama and theater to her work, and her groundbreaking designs dominated European runways in the 1980s and 1990s, worn by models including Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell.
In 2018, Vogue Australia described a black dress with a signature Mughal neckline - worn by Demi Moore in the 1993 film "Indecent Proposal" - "one of the 11 best party outfits ever on-screen".
She created bold and dazzling pieces for music artists including Diana Ross, David Bowie, and George Michael. Mugler retired in the early 2000s, although his vintage designs have been featured in awards ceremonies and videos in recent years, and have been worn by musicians such as Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Cardi B.
In 2009, Beyonce wore a Mugler-designed Harley-Davidson corset for an earlier video of George Michael, and Lady Gaga wore a suit and hat from the 1995 designer collection in her 2010 "The Phone" music video, Rolling Stone magazine reported.
Mugla briefly reappeared on the fashion scene in 2019, creating the infamous "Wet Look" outfit that Kim Kardashian wore to the West Met Gala. The beige latex dress - designed as if she had come out of the sea - illuminated social media and the designer brought a huge leg of new young fans.
American designer Casey Cadwalader, who became the creative director of Mughal fashion in 2018, paid tribute to her on Instagram on Sunday.
"Manfred, I am honored to recognize you and to work in your beautiful world. You have changed our perceptions of beauty, confidence, representation, and self-empowerment. Your legacy is something I carry with everything I do. Thank you. , "He wrote.
