Wastewater is expected to be the CDC's latest tool in detecting the Kovid-19 virus.

CNN stars Jane Christensen, Brenda Goodman, and John Bonfield

For the first time, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention will release data on how far the coronavirus has spread in the country's wastewater. It will add this test data to its Covid-19 dashboard.

The National Wastewater Monitoring System monitors wastewater for disease in 19 states. Tests show that the level of the virus has dropped in two-thirds of NWSS's 400 sites from levels measured 15 days ago, according to a CDC official familiar with the plan.

The CDC says more than 500 sites will begin sending data in the coming weeks. A media briefing on the monitoring system is scheduled for Friday.

Not all sites are tested daily, but since studies have shown that approximately 80% of people infected with Kovid-19 carry viral DNA in their feces, this type of data is a good indication of just how widespread the disease is in the community. It is highly sensitive and can detect the presence of the virus if only 1 in 100,000 people in an area is infected. It's also an early indicator because it doesn't depend on people feeling sick and asking for a test - there are even symptoms.

It takes five to seven days to get wastewater data after flushing the toilet, and samples become positive four to six days before clinical cases appear, according to the CDC.

Dr. Amy Kirby, a microbiologist at CDC, led the National Wastewater Monitoring System Project.

To avoid direct comparisons, Kirby said, the dashboard will compare each site with its previous results. The main metric will be the concentration of percentage change of position in the last 15 days. Other metrics will be able to see how many discoveries were made in those 15 days - how many samples ever tested positive.
