After Microsoft announced the acquisition of its Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard, Sony on Thursday responded to the notion that some games could eventually become Microsoft's exclusive.
"We hope that Microsoft will abide by the terms of the agreement and continue to ensure that activation games are cross-platform," a Sony correspondent told The Wall Street Journal. This is consistent with what Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer wrote on Tuesday after the announcement: that activation blizzard games are being played on a variety of platforms, and that Microsoft plans to "continue to support those communities."
Sony's Thursday statement leaves little room for explanation, raising a bigger question: What will happen to The Activation Blizzard games on the PlayStation console once the "contract agreement" expires?
According to a Bloomberg report citing sources, Microsoft will keep "some activation games" on PlayStation consoles, but "some content" will be exclusive to Microsoft and Xbox. "It's not our goal to take society away from that platform, and we're committed to it," Spencer told Bloomberg.
Microsoft's vision for other acquisitions is broad: Although Microsoft plans to offer Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 exclusive on Xbox, the company has a history of cross-platform support with Mojang's Minecraft. With this in mind, it is possible for Microsoft to keep existing multi-platform releases while limiting large new releases with Xbox and PC exclusives.
This, of course, made the PlayStation no longer the exclusive "Call of Duty Home," as Andrew House, the PlayStation CEO, announced in 2015.
